About Sarapiqui

"Eco-tourism" is booming in the Puerto Viejo region. Some possibilities:

  • Boating on the Rio Sarapiquí is possible, using any number of outfitters in town. Wildlife encounters on the river are common; bring a good camera.
  • Estación Biológica La Selva, La Selva Biological Station, is a research facility 7 km east of Puerto Viejo operated by an extensive consortium of universities in Costa Rica and the United States. Guided tours are possible by advance arrangement, and are highly recommended for their access to "primary" (old-growth) rain forest. You probably will be guided by a biologist with a great deal of knowledge about the flora and fauna and a 60x scope on a tripod for exceptional closeups of the local wildlife. A guided tour takes about 3 hours and costs $30 (dec 2010). Accommodation available for visitors, who are expected to mix with researchers; US$166/day for full board for two.(WT-en) Fremdh 12:36, 24 November 2009 (EST)
